In 119 countries, YMCAs help people overcome barriers such as poverty, illiteracy, or chronic disease by providing them with access to the building blocks of self-determination: social inclusion, quality education and health services, safe spaces for personal growth and leadership development, and employment and livelihood support.
The YMCA's Emerging Global Leaders Institute (EGLI)* has decided to mobilize resources to support the Cambodia YMCA's work to provide opportunities to children growing up on the streets in the city of Phnom Penh in Cambodia.
There are nearly 20,000 street children in Phnom Penh. In response to this need, the Cambodia YMCA, provides free meals and quality education including computer training, photography and media production to homeless children in the city of Phnom Penh. The Y offers an opportunity for the kids to lift themselves and their family out of poverty and a unique safe haven where vulnerable kids can learn, play and thrive.
Sokthea Phay, staff member at the Long Beach YMCA in California and a member of the 2017-2018 EGLI Cohort, grew up in Cambodia and shared the following message:
"Growing up in a poor family and seeing a lot homeless children living on the street in Cambodia, I became very passionate to help those vulnerable kids in the slum and extreme rural areas across Cambodia. In 2008, I became the founding staff of YMCA Cambodia's program called the 'Cambodian Street Children's Program' helping homeless kids with disabilities, affected by diseases and malnutrition in the many slum communities.
Today the program is called 'The Cambodia YMCA Youth Institute' and is a youth development program that uses technology as a youth engagement tool to teach social, academic, and workforce skills. This program helps those vulnerable kids and youth break the circle of poverty by using the skill sets they learned at the Y."
Thank you for your thoughtful and generous support! Of your contribution, 100% will be used to strengthen the Cambodia YMCA's capacity to serve more vulnerable children.
