In 119 countries, YMCAs help people overcome barriers such as poverty, illiteracy, or chronic disease by providing them with access to the building blocks of self-determination: social inclusion, quality education and health services, safe spaces for personal growth and leadership development, and employment and livelihood support.
The YMCA's Emerging Global Leaders Institute (EGLI)* has decided to mobilize resources to support the Sioux YMCA, the only YMCA on a native American reservation. The Sioux Y is serving youth living on the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Reservation in South Dakota where they face challenges such as 80% unemployment rates, double the national average for high-school drop out and 95% of residents living below the poverty line.
To address these critical challenges, the Sioux Y develops young leaders by offering free of charge camp programs, tutoring, computer skills classes, after-school programs and a hot meal.
Dan Fraser, staff member at the Sioux YMCA and member of the 2017-2018 EGLI Cohort, shared the following message:
"During school-year, our Dupree site offers an after-school program that gives our youth a safe space where they can play, ask for help with schoolwork and get a hot meal through our Community Food Program. In communities that are often plagued by chronic drug and alcohol abuse, the Sioux Y provides these youth with strong, sober, adult role models.
In the summer, our resident camp, Camp Marrowbone, offers our youth a week away from their often troubled homes where they have the chance to explore new activities, develop positive relationships with responsible and caring adults.
Thank you for supporting the Sioux Y and enabling us to continue to deliver on our mission"
Thank you for your thoughtful and generous support! Of your contribution, 100% will be used to strengthen the Sioux Y's capacity to serve more vulnerable youth in their community.
